Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (天龍八部 1997)

Another Louis Cha adaptation, this one built from three heroes whose lives cross in surprising ways. It is a story about identity, as much as fighting. I enjoyed how it keeps changing who you think the main character is.

The tone swings from comedy to tragedy within a single episode. Some of the effects have aged poorly, but the emotional core is strong. The fate of one particular hero still stuck with me.

Forty episodes is a manageable run for a story this sprawling. It is a good second wuxia after the classics. I would suggest it to anyone who likes tangled family secrets.
