Journey to the West (西遊記 1996)

The old tale of the pilgrim monk and his three companions, told with cheerful effects and a lot of heart. Dicky Cheung (張衛健) plays the Monkey King with endless energy. Children and adults can enjoy it together.

Each episode usually follows a demon and a small moral, so the show is easy to pick up at any point. The comic timing is lovely, and the sentimental moments are well judged. I did not expect to be moved by a monkey.

Forty-one episodes make for a long, easy season. It is probably the most warmly remembered version in Hong Kong. A good gentle watch.
