Beyond the Realm of Conscience (宮心計)

A Tang-dynasty palace story about a young woman who enters the court and learns what survival costs. Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) and Moses Chan (陳豪) lead a strong cast. It rewards viewers who like to track the small moves of rival factions.

The writing is clever about how power works through favours and silence. Some turns are melodramatic, yet I kept going. The costumes alone justify a look.

At thirty-three episodes it is brisk for this kind of show. It feels like a successor to the older palace dramas without copying them. I found it surprisingly gripping on a rainy weekend.
