War and Beauty (金枝慾孽)

A palace drama about the women of a Qing court, where every smile hides a calculation. It is cruel in a patient, well-lit way. I started it expecting costume fluff and was caught off guard by how bleak it gets.

Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) anchors the show, and the supporting cast keeps pace. The costumes and sets are beautiful, and the story keeps asking what a person gives up to stay safe. Nobody here is entirely innocent.

Thirty episodes feel tight for this much scheming. It is not cosy viewing, but it left me thinking for days. A good one to try if you enjoy slow betrayals.
